ABOUT -

Cusco's Main Square & Temple of the Sun

Cusco, the capital of the Inca Empire, is the heart of a cultural and archaeological circuit that leads to a deep knowledge of the people who inhabited the Andes. Two places are icons of this millenary city, the Plaza de Armas (or Main Square), and the Temple of the Sun (or “Coricancha”, “Golden Temple”).

A marsh, dried by the Incas, was transformed into the administrative, religious and cultural center of the Empire’s capital. This was the navel of the Inca world. In the conquest the Spaniards surrounded this central point (today Cusco’s Main Square) with temples and mansions built upon the Inca palaces. In this place Tupac Amaru II was executed in 1781, for that reason it is called Huacaypata or the "place of tears". Now the Square is the center of modern Cusco, surrounded by restaurants, jewelries, travel agencies and the same temples of the conquest period.

The place where the Main Square is located was the religious and administrative center of the Inca period. The palaces of Pachacútec, Huayna Capac and Inca Viracocha were located around the Square, and almost all the festivities were celebrated here, including Inti Raymi, Huarachicuy, the dance of Amaru and Capac Raymi.

For its part, the Temple of the Sun,  or “Coricancha” or “Golden Temple”, is an Inca building on top of which the Convent of Santo Domingo was built. It was one of the most famous, revered and respected temples of the Inca Empire. The golden precinct, as it was known, was a sacred place where the maximum Inca god was worshiped: the Inti (Sun).

Some other structures that are integrated to the Coricancha precinct are: the Temple of the Moon, the Temple of Venus and Stars, the Temple of Illapa or Chuki Illapa, the Temple of K'uychi or Arco Iris (Rainbow), the Inti Pampa, the Solar Garden and the Springs.

Cusco is also the historical capital of Peru, with constitutional rank. Its name, of Aymaran origin, means in Spanish "Carg of the Owl". The city owns many titles and one of them is "The Rome of America" because of the amount monuments that it owns. Cusco is at 3,400 masl and has 420,000 inhabitants. It is the main touristic city of Peru.
