ABOUT

The “Leon Dormido” or “Kicker Rock” is an islet formed by two vertical rocks, one compact and imposing and the other one thin in the form of an obelisk that rises up to 148 meters above the water in the Galapagos Marine Reserve, Ecuador. It is in open sea, one hour by boat to the northeast of the city of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, in San Cristóbal Island, capital of the province of Galápagos,.

The ocean depths and the rocks are the paradise for scuba divers with oxygen and underwater swimmers. You dive up to 100 meters, descending by fantastic colorful basalt walls or in the central canal. These are shelter for Galapagos sharks, hammerhead sharks, white-finned reef sharks or other species of fish such as golden rays, eagle rays, barracudas, rainbow fish or a vast number of tropical fish. Besides, you can also find sea turtles, octopuses and sea lions. Depending on the season, dolphins and whales may also be seen.

The canal between the rocks is also an ideal place for swimming and snorkeling. Its waters are so clear and clean that it is possible to see rocks and marine life in the background. Some bird species such as blue footed boobies, masked boobies, real red-bellied frigates and pelicans can be observed on the rocks with the help of binoculars. Kicker rock is also a resting place for sea lions, while hundreds of blue-footed boobies nest in small caves.

The similarity between the silhouette of the rocks and a lion in a sleeping state, gives rise to the name of the place. The rocks have their origin in an eroded cone of volcanic tuff. The rocky crag in the shape of an obelisk can be surrounded by a boat to study the geological formation of the Galapagos.
