ABOUT -

Huaca Pucllana pre-Inca complex

Huaca Pucllana or "Place to Play" is an archaeological complex whose main point is a pyramid of 25 m high built almost entirely with adobes and fillings of boulders and sand. It is located in the District of Miraflores, Lima, Peru. It belongs to the Regional Development Period (200-700 AD) of the Lima Culture. The site has been scientifically researched since 1981, which has allowed its conservation and restoration, to become an attraction of the Metropolitan Area of the capital of Peru.

The pyramid of Huaca Pucllana is stepped and has a lengthened shape, oriented from southwest to northeast. Its surface is occupied by patios with stepped structures painted in yellow. Each upper level is accessed through zigzag ramps and passages. As a main building, it dominates the landscape. Next to it there are a group of courtyards, squares and enclosures.

The archaeological complex is completed by an exhibition hall, tour circuit and other attractions. Its total area is 6 hectares (60.000 square meters) and in its surroundings rises the modern district of Miraflores. The archaeological complex is fully integrated into the urban environment.

The predominant constructive technique is called the “Técnica del librero” (bookseller technique). The walls can reach up to 8 m in height (those that define the sides of the great pyramid). The pottery corresponds to the late phases of the Lima style. You can do several activities: a tour of the site (since the third part of the pyramid and the integrity of the lower part are arranged as a circuit); visit the exhibition hall inaugurated in 1984 which shows part of the findings; visit the park of native flora and fauna where you will find corn, pacae, guava, tuna, tara and guarango that are exhibited next to South American camelids, creole ducks or "joke" in muchik language, guinea pigs and hairless Peruvian dogs, which are now Cultural Heritage of Peru; and to visit the area of traditional technology.
