ABOUT -

Machu Picchu

The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, an Inca city turned into a wonder of the world, gathers all the titles dedicated to its monumentality: Cultural World Heritage Site, one of the New 7 Wonders of the Modern World and Natural Protected Area of the State or National Park. It is the most important tourist attractions in Peru and is among the most famous in the world, with 600.000 visitors per year, although its daily capacity is limited to 2.500 people.

Machu Picchu or «Old Mountain» is the contemporary name of this ancient Inca town, built before the XV century between the mountains Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu, Southern Peru, at 2.490 masl. The nearest main city is Cusco.

The archaeological zone is accessible from the post-Inca roads or using the Hiram Bingham road. Peru Rail is one of the two railway companies authorized to offer transportation within the National Park and to the town of Aguas Calientes, from where you will have the options of making the way to Machu Picchu by foot or ascending by bus.

Hiram Bingham, an American history professor, arrived in Machu Picchu on July 24, 1911 and got very impressed by what he saw. He got the auspices of Yale University, the National Geographic Society and the Government of Peru to immediately start the scientific study of the site. He directed archaeological works in Machu Picchu between 1912 and 1915. The notoriety of Machu Picchu began in 1913 with the publication of an article in the National Geographic magazine.

The archaeological complex is divided in two zones: the agricultural zone, formed by sets of crop terraces that are located to the south; and the urban zone. The main structures are: the Temple of the Sun, the Royal Residence, the Sacred Square, the Intihuatana, the Sacred Rock, the group of Three Gates, the Acllahuasi, the Condor Group, the Staircase of the Fountains and the Quarry Zone. The city was united to the rest of the Inca Empire through the Qhapaq Ñan or Camino Real Andino (Royal Andean Trail), commonly known as “Camino del Inca”.
