ABOUT -

Murillo Main Square

The Plaza (Square) Murillo is "point_zero” or “kilometer 0", from where all distances are measured to any point in Bolivia. It is located in the city of La Paz, one of the most special cities on the planet because it is the highest capital in the world at 3,625 meters above sea level. This Square is also called “Plaza Juliana”, “Plaza de Armas” or “Plaza Mayor”. Plaza Murillo is the heart of the city and the facilities of Bolivia's political power are around it, while the judiciary administration is in the city of Sucre, the country's constitutional capital.

The saqaure is called Plaza Murillo since 1909 to celebrate the centenary of the revolution of July 16, 1809, under the leadership of Pedro Domingo Murillo, who proclaimed the independence of the nation taking advantage of a procession. In January 1810, the leader Murillo and other 90 revolutionaries were hanged in the square that now bears his name.

During the XIX century Plaza Murillo was consolidated as the center of power and public life of La Paz city. The buildings of the main institutions of the State are still located here, they are: the Government Palace or "Palacio Quemado", the Legislative Palace, the Baroque Cathedral, the Prefecture, the Palace of the Counts of Arana and the current Museum of National Art. Plaza Murillo is a place of civic, military and religious acts, a symbolic space of consecration and recreation of power. It is also the center of daily activities such as: street trades, encounter of the elderly, children playing among thousands of pigeons, busy public workers, politicians chatting or visitors taking photos.

The main points of interest of Plaza Murillo are: the bronze plaque of "Kilometer 0"; the monument to Murillo; the female figures representing the seasons of the year and the four muses; the stone act of La Paz revolution with the names of all the heroes of independence and its proclamation; the bust of Gualberto Villarroel, the president of the Republic who died hanged from a lighthouse in the plaza; and the panel of the protomartyrs. In other words, all the constitutive symbols of a mestizo culture in the only nation of America where the majority of the population is indigenous.
