ABOUT -

Ollantaytambo Inca fortress

Ollantaytambo or watchover, is the only Inca settlement in Peru that still remains inhabited. In other words, it is a living archaeological complex. It is the capital of the Ollantaytambo district in the south of Peru, 90 km northwest of Cusco city at 2.800 masl. Ollantaytambo is next to the Patakancha river, at a short distance from the confluence with the Urubamba River and very close to the famous Machu Picchu, one of the new 7 Wonders of the World.

Ollantaytambo is an important tourist attraction for its archaeological value and because it is one of the starting points of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The living city of Ollantaytambo is a typical example of the extraordinary urban planning of the Incas.

Its stone pavement alleys, its ruins scattered everywhere and its terraces are attractions that stand out. Because of their magnificent views of the Sacred Valley it is recommended to visit the Old Fortress and the Temple.

During the Spanish conquest, Ollantaytambo served as temporary capital for Manco Inca Yupanqui, leader of the Inca resistance against the Spanish conquistadors. It is commonly called "Fortress", due to its enormous walls, but it was actually an inn or lodge strategically located to dominate the valley.

The architectural style employed, as well as the quality of each stone individually worked, make the city one of the most peculiar and surprising works of art made by the ancient Peruvians. There are fifteen blocks of houses located to the north of the main square that constitute a true historic legacy. Some colonial style houses are built upon beautiful Incan walls finely polished. Ollantaytambo is a must-see point to get to Machu Picchu by train.

Its main structures are: the Royal House of the Sun; the Choqana Fort; the Mañay Raqay or K'uychipunku Plaza; the Temple of the Sun; the Monumental Front and the Campus of the 10 Hornacinas; the Bath of the Ñusta; and the Platforms.
