ABOUT -

Sun island

An old Andean myth tells that after the Great Flood, humanity was created by the god Viracocha on Sun Island or Titicaca Island. For that reason, it is a sacred place. The lake where the Island is located takes its name, Titicaca, which in Spanish translated as "Puma de Piedra" (Stone Puma). The Sun Island is located at 4,075 meters above sea level, and “Titicaca” is its original name.

It is the largest island of Titicaca Lake with 14.3 km2 of area, on the border between Peru and Bolivia. The Island has a rugged relief and Inca terraces cross the slopes of its hills. The island is on the Bolivian side, in the municipality of Copacabana, province of Manco Capac, Department of La Paz. Its inhabitants are Quichuas and Aymaras indigenous, who carry out tourism, craft, agriculture and grazing activities.

The tourist attractions of the Island are the archaeological sites such as: the "Sacred Rock" or "Rock of the Origins" (which would have been the site from which Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo left to found the Inca Empire in Cusco); the Chinkana Or labyrinth; Pilkokaina Palace; the stone steps of Yumani; a pre-Columbian water fountain; and the archaeological museum of Challapampa.

Sun Island is divided into three communities: the "Yumani" community in the south; the "Challa" community, which has a white sand beach on the east-central coast; and the "Challapampa" community in the far north. The southern part of the Island is the most visited one due to the archaeological ruins of the Pilkokaina Temple and the stone steps of the Yumani pier, which lead to the Fountain of Life.

To the north part of the Island can be reached by boat from Yumani to Challapampa, or walking 3 hours along a pre-Columbian footpath. The archaeological sites of the Chincana (labyrinth of stone walls), the Temple of the Sun and the Table of Ceremonies are located there. There is also the Sacred Rock of the Origins, 65 m high by 7 m wide, and there it is where the god Viracocha created the humanity for the second time after the great flood. The myth tells that the sun and the moon were hidden in this rock during the flood, in two cavities that are possible to see today. There is also an interpretation circuit and an archaeological museum. From Challapampa you can visit the Island of the Moon by boat.
