ABOUT -

Uros' floating island and Taquile island

Experiences with ancestral communities, such as the Aymara community of Uro and the Quichua community of Taquile, are waiting for those who visit the Uro’s floating islands of and the Taquile island, in the Bay of Puno, Titica lake, Peru.

The Uro’s floating islands are located 7 km to the northeast of the city of Puno, at 3,810 masl. They are a group of 70 small artificial territories made of totora (aquatic plant that grows in lakes) that are part of the Titicaca Lake National Reserve. The Uros reside on the floating islands, they are an ancestral Peruvian community who know the tradition of building on interlaced blocks of totora (khili) roots, superimposing layers of mats (woven totora). On this basis they raise their houses.

The production of handicrafts is the most important activity for the Uros, who sell it to visitors. They make chuspas (loom woven bags that usually contains coca leaves), carpets, bags, chullos (hoods with ear muffs), girdles, works made in totora reed (like scale rafts) and stuffed birds. The Uros also offer communitarian and experiential tourism services, lodging, typical food and totora rafts rides.

The Taquile Island is 35 km from Puno or 1h20 from Uro’s floating islands by speed boat, at 3,910 meters above sea level. Taquile is inhabited by a community of Quichua speakers, which distinguishes them from all other communities that inhabit Titicaca lake who are Aymara. The inhabitants of Taquile wear colorful clothes and are reputed to produce the best Peruvian artisanal fabrics. The people of the community offer the service of lodging with the families of the place.

The length of Titicaca Lake is 204 km and 65 km wide, it occupies 8,562 km² (4,772 km² in Peru and 3,790 km² in Bolivia) at an average height of 3.810 masl. The lake is transparent up to 65 m deep. The color of the water is blue.
