ABOUT -

Witche's Market

The Witches’ Market offers an encounter with the magical. It is an authentically popular atmosphere, full of human histories where the myths, the tales and the legends of ancient times live in the present. It is located between the streets of Linares, Sagárnaga, Santa Cruz and Illampu in the city of La Paz, capital of the Plurinational State of Bolivia. The Witches’ Market is much more than an artisan or indigenous market, like those that are so traditional in the Andean region of Latin America.

All kinds of amulets and traditional articles as remedies for evil spells can be bought in tents and awnings of this market. You can find articles such as:  medicinal plants, protective plants, objects against evil spirits according to Aymara thought, beautiful fabrics, craft figures or charangos, amulets to seek fortune, small figurines of frogs (money), turtles (long life), condors (protection in travels), owls (wisdom), pumas (new employment) or tarot decks.

But above all, there are hundreds of big, small and tiny llama fetuses which, according to the indigenous Bolivians, protect the new houses. If a flame fetus is buried in the land on which a house is going to be built, the fortune is guaranteed for the new home. To attract personal luck you have to burn a llama fetus and chew coca leaves.

In the Witches’ Market, Christianity is mixed with the religion of Mother Earth or “Pachamama” and the rituals for good luck, fortune, love or work, are performed in the streets by sorcerers or people who earn a living in that way.

It is a market that does not go unnoticed in one of the most special cities of the planet, because La Paz is considered as the highest capital of the world, at an altitude of 3,625 masl. La Paz was also declared as one of the 7 Wonderful Cities of Earth in 2014, which led his Municipality to launch the campaign "La Paz Maravillosa". Bolivia is the only country in the Americas where the indigenous Quechua and Aymara population are the majority.
